SUMMARY:USDOT Steel Slag Initiative Stakeholder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2026 USDOT Steel Slag Initiative Stakeholder Workshop\, a full-day forum dedicated to evaluating viable construction applications for steel slag and identifying pathways to expand the market for this important industrial by-product. \nRecent changes in domestic steel manufacturing have significantly increased the volume of electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags produced in the United States. Despite this growth\, steel slag remains largely underutilized and under-investigated. Its expanded use represents a substantial opportunity to support domestic manufacturing\, create new markets\, and reduce reliance on foreign material imports. \nThis workshop will convene experts and stakeholders from federal and state transportation agencies\, steel producers and slag processors\, practicing engineers\, and academia to assess the current state of practice\, identify research and data gaps\, and examine specification and policy needs. Together\, participants will chart a path forward for increasing the practical and sustainable use of steel slag in construction. \nA key outcome of the workshop will be the development of a structured Research Agenda to guide future research\, innovation\, and education efforts under the USDOT Steel Slag Initiative.

Traffic incidents are unplanned roadway events that affect or impede the normal flow of traffic; they increase the likelihood of secondary crashes and pose a threat to the safety of incident responders as well as the traveling public. Incidents affect travel reliability\, commerce\, and transportation system performance. One of the essential responsibilities of transportation and public safety agencies is to ensure the safe and quick clearance of traffic incidents.\nTraffic Incident Management (TIM) consists of a planned and coordinated multi-disciplinary process to detect\, respond to\, and clear traffic incidents so that traffic flow may be restored as safely and quickly as possible. Effective TIM reduces the duration and impacts of traffic incidents; improves the safety of motorists\, crash victims\, and emergency responders; and reduces the frequency of secondary crashes.\nSpeaker: Todd Evans\, Planner\, New Jersey Institute of Technology\nCredits: 1 Management Contact Hour\n11:00am-12:00pm\nTitle: Basic Work Zone Safety for Road Departments\nDescription: This workshop will introduce municipal and county public works and utilities participants to an overview of working safely in the roadway.
